Changes in the MarketThe most striking change in the past two and a half decades is the steady decline in poster availability. There are a finite number of posters that survived the wars. Posters were slapped up and ripped down. Many burned.There has been a marked increase in purchases for public collections. Museums and libraries realize that war posters from all parts of the world are a potent images that embrace all aspects of the war years. The content is historically interesting, the designs are often brilliant.There is also an accelerated interest in posters that reveal the role of women in the wars whether in the services, on the factory floor, in a victory garden, recycling or buying bonds. Posters relating to keeping secrets have always been popular, but nothing tops the desirability of recruiting posters for elite units, Marines, Para-troops, Submarines and Air Corps.Art Market/Poster MarketThe art market generally and the poster market specifically is the solid ground floor of the art market. We were delighted that the fall Poster Fair was one of our most successful fairs ever despite the economic turmoil.Next WaveThe market for Chinese art has exploded in recent years. A museum devoted to posters of the Cultural Revolution opened in Shanghai last year. It will be a tricky market as many Chinese posters have been reproduced. Our spring catalog will contain a section of Cultural Revolution posters from a collection formed in the 70s.
